Vintage Fabrics and Embroidery

My sister-in-law gave me a bunch of her Grandma's fabrics and whatnot awhile back (oh say, 6 or so years ago) and I finally decided to give it all another look. There is some amazing stuff! Pillowcases, handkerchiefs, table linens, etc. There's also some wonderful embroidery on a lot of this stuff. I also found some great blank pieces for an upcoming embroidery project I want to do, I've been itching to work on it for awhile! I have a few more canvases to stretch and since I end up letting that sit a day between gesso layers I figure I'll work on some embroidery.

Around the Studio

What I've been listening to:

Dead Ringer: I fell in love with this band about 5 seconds into the first song. From their last.fm page:
"Dead Ringer are a band from Bergen County, NJ that openly admits to missing the '90s. And when they say that, they're referring not to overwrought, flannel-laden grunge, boy bands or even the third wave of ska, but to the days of fast, catchy, melodic skatepunk. Back when labels still routinely released compilations on CD and had mailorder catalogs"

No Enemy: Chicago pop punk! What else do you need? Check out the new album here for free as well!

I am going to be curating and also showing in the May I AM Logan Square exhibit. This is last minute as the show that was scheduled was canceled. I am accepting proposals from artists who would like to show with me for this group exhibit. The artist should live and/or work in Logan Square and the exhibit will be dealing with female issues/identity, etc. Email heartless.arts@gmail.com for details or to submit work.

This will be May 5th, more details and poster when I have them.

Currently Reading

This one's actually next to read. I picked it up at G-Mart comics in my neighborhood and it's a blind purchase as I had no recommendations for it but it looks entertaining.

I love zine collections and this one is easily becoming my all time favorite. I got it at Quimby's in Wicker Park but you can find it on Amazon or through Microcosm Publishing

Still working on this Ed Ruscha book. It's a lot of information to process so it's hard for me to find the time to sit down and focus.

Clear The Air

Here's a sample of the necklaces I'll be dropping off at Lenny & Me very soon. I need to package them and then finish some brooches, then it's all ready to go. Better work on that before I head out to see Dropkick Murphys, Against Me! and Off With Their Heads.

go go go go go go

Ok, maybe a black and white studio shot is dumb because you can't tell what color the canvas is, but hey, it looks cool. It's in progress anyways, which by the way, is taking forever. This is part of a diptych and I really wish I had two easels! After really seeing and studying the texture on a Jasper Johns piece at the Art Institute I'm really not happy with this background, I need to push it further. I got some weird palette knives at the hardware store today so I can play around with paint application.

I got a "thanks but no thanks" for an installation proposal I sent in to a bar for their gallery window. I was pretty bummed but I need to keep working and moving along. The new Red City Radio album is called, "The Dangers of Standing Still" and I've been sort of feeling that way lately. Must keep working, must keep trying. Also have fun going to shows and hanging with my friends.

Circles 'round the Moon

I can't wait to get a new camera (hooray tax refund!). But till I can make a decision on what to get you all need to still deal with these mediocre photos.

Spinning in Circles is a Gateway Drug

I love using lyrics or song titles when I can't come up with my own blog title. I'm so original!

Good news, you'll soon me able to get my jewelry at a store right here in Chicago. I'll update as soon as I drop the goods off. I ordered a bunch more supplies today so it might be 2-3 more weeks until stuff is done.

40 degrees in Chicago in February! Perfect time to do some spray painting out on the back deck and not freeze my ass off!

Good Times

Thanks to all who entered the Heartless Arts Valentine's giveaway! The winner was chosen yesterday at noon and congrats to Joan!

I would like to do more giveaways in the future. Make sure to subscribe to my blog's RSS feed or become a fan on facebook to keep up to date.

Working on some canvases during my snow day (hooray blizzard!)

Made some brooches for fun.

It's time to sink or swim, sail on or anchor in

What I've been working on; small art pieces and also some necklaces. Making jewelry has quickly become a new addiction for me and I can't wait to experiment with new and different techniques.

Small wood panel- Acrylic and acrylic ink with a clear gloss varnish

Some pendants ready for bails to be glued on

Finished necklaces

Oh Hey!

Some underpainting being done tonight in addition to working on some necklace pendants. Heck yes Monday party night in my studio.
